Toyota
Problem: Overstocking inventory and stockouts can carry risks for a global automotive company.
Solution: When I was studying for my MBA, one case study focused on Toyota’s innovative kanban system. Known as a just-in-time delivery system, the approach relies on dealer orders, market intelligence, and economic indicators to create products just in time for delivery. By using this system, Toyota is able to maintain minimal inventory levels and avoid stockouts (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2005).
Hospitals
Problem: In the United States, the World Bank Group reports that there are just 2.7 hospital beds for 1,000 residents. When many people get sick or injured all at once, there aren’t always enough beds available.
Solution: Hospital forecasting systems are used to predict admission levels based on historical data, weather patterns, and scheduled procedures. With this information, the hospital can appropriately schedule staff members. During periods of high expected demand, elective procedures can be proactively delayed.
